The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) in Tucson, Arizona is looking for a Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) Medical Director. We’re looking for an experienced geriatrician who leads a diverse interdisciplinary team that provides care to frail and vulnerable Veterans in their homes. The HBPC Medical Director will collaborate with the HBPC Program Manager and provide medical leadership to the HBPC Program at SAVAHCS. You will report to the Chief of Geriatrics and Extended Care Service.
Duties include but are not limited to:
The HBPC Medical Director manages the program’s staff physicians and mid-level providers.
You will be responsible for overall clinical supervision and management of patients in the HBPC Program.
You will be responsible for the maintenance and improvement of medical systems to deliver quality health care for the HBPC patients, which includes performance improvement activities.
You will be readily available for the team members for collaboration when medical and/or other problems arise.
The HBPC Medical Director also serves as backup for other HBPC programs.
The HBPC Medical Director serves as the physician member of the HBPC leadership team and as a primary care provider for veterans enrolled in HBPC.
As a physician leader, the HBPC Medical Director leads HBPC interdisciplinary teams in providing high quality, patient-centered, and resource conscious clinical care for older adult veterans with complex chronic diseases and neuropsychiatric illnesses in complex legal and psychosocial environments.
The HBPC Medical Director is a key member of the HBPC leadership team and collaborates closely with the HBPC Program Manager. This physician serves as a member, consultant, collaborator, and contributor to the HBPC interdisciplinary team and program.
Paid-Time Off: 50-55 days of annual paid-time offer per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME).
Recruitment Incentives: Sign-On incentive will be authorized for highly qualified applicants.
Relocation Expenses: May be authorized for highly qualified applicants.
Education Debt Reduction Program: Up to $200,000 in student loan repayment.
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401k with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement.
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
Employment Requirements:
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any U.S. State or territory. Must maintain current, full, active, and unrestricted license.
U.S. Citizenship required: non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Must pass pre-employment physical examination which will include lab draws and subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Subject to background/security investigation.
Additional requirements:
Completion of an accredited Geriatric Medicine fellowship.
Board-certification in Geriatric Medicine.
At least 3 years of work experience as a geriatrician after the completion of the Geriatric Medicine fellowship.
At least 1 year of management/supervisory experience.
Preferred Experience:
Geriatric medicine expert with knowledge and practice experience in geriatric medicine, dementia care, mental health illness management, rehabilitation, transitions of care, and healthcare systems navigation.Experience in medical directorship of either a home-based care or clinic-based program is preferred.
