JOB SUMMARY
John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital (JHSH) of Cook County is the flagship of the Cook County Health & Hospitals System. The Level 1 Trauma Center is one of the most respected in the nation.

The Attending Physician shall be specialized in administering various types of anesthetics to patients during surgical procedures; primarily responsible for patient safety and wellbeing prior to, during and after surgery; inspect and test all equipment and adhere to all Federal, local and department rules and regulations; consult, teach and instruct ancillary personnel in all facets of operative care; perform all other related duties as assigned.

Typical Duties

  • * Provides anesthetic care throughout the hospital while meeting and exceeding compliance standards

  • * Provides complete range of anesthetic care to patients including preoperative assessment, intraoperative anesthetic administration and monitoring, and post anesthesia care in compliance with the national Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JACHO) standards

  • * Works independently and provides medical direction to residents and CRNA's

  • * Provides anesthesia related care in all functional areas of the OR, OB, PACU, ICU Ward and clinical settings

  • * Examines patients, obtains medical history, and uses diagnostic test to determine risk during surgical and other medical procedures

  • * Coordinates and directs work during medical procedures with nurses, residents, CRNA's, medical technicians, and health care providers

  • * Administers anesthetic or sedation during medical procedures using local, regional, general, and MAC methods

  • * Coordinates the administration of anesthetics with surgeons during procedures in the operation room

  • * Provides and maintains life support and airway management as needed, and helps prepare patients for emergency surgery

  • * Determines when patients have recovered, or stabilized enough, to be transferred to ICU, or discharged home following surgery

  • * Takes on-call, as well as in-house calls

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • * Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.) or Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine (D.O) from an accredited medical college or university

  • * Successful completion of an accredited residency in Anesthesiology

  • * Must be licensed as a physician and surgeon in the State of Illinois

  • * Current certification with American Board of Anesthesiologist (ABA) or eligible for ABA certification (Must obtain certification within one (1) year following the start of this employment)

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • * Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to ensure the protection of the confidentiality and security of healthcare information for all patients

  • * Strong working knowledge base in anesthesiology and pain management; participates in the development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies and standards essential to the delivery of quality anesthetic care

  • * Proficiency in the safe administration of blood and blood products ensuring that all protocol is followed

  • * Excellent interpersonal communication skills - the ability to establish rapport with families

  • * Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • * Strong decision making skills

  • * Excellent organizational skills

  • * Ability to take on-call as well as in-house calls

  • * Ability to build and maintain relationships within CCH and with appropriate outside organizations

  • * Ability to prepare reports and effectively present information in meetings

  • * Ability to exercise discretion and make wise decisions

  • * Excellent teaching and mentoring skills in clinical anesthesia for Oral Surgery residents, Anesthesia residents, and interns.

  • * Ability to handle many simultaneous demands and meet all required deadlines

  • * Ability to maintain a professional demeanor when challenged

  • * Ability to perform clinical duties as an anesthesiologist

  • * Sensitivity and respect in caring for patients and in dealing with patients, family members, trainees, and CCH staff of diverse backgrounds
