The Medical Director, Organ and Surgical Services supports the mission, goals and strategic plan of Nevada Donor Network, Inc. (NDN) by providing support for clinical operations. The Medical Director, Organ and Surgical Services is a licensed physician with experience in organ donation, organ transplantation, and/or intensive care medicine, and has provided medical management, oversight, and consultation to assist organ personnel in their donor management, clinical management, placement and recovery of organ/tissue for transplantation or research.
Essential Functions Statement(s)
Participate in NDN abdominal organ recovery surgery to local and national standards for organ transplantation.
Provides advice and counsel to staff in the process of donor evaluation and determination of organ suitability.
Ensures compliance with applicable organ allocation and distribution standards .
Mediates disputes between recovery and/or transplant surgeons and programs; including real-time consultations.
Assists leadership and management in specific projects designed to improve NDNs performance as an organ procurement organization (OPO).
In conjunction with NDN staff, review data regarding organ utilization with designated transplant centers; recommend changes in practice when necessary to increase utilization and ensure protocols are consistent with current standards of practice.
Provide advice and counsel to NDN staff when addressing potential adverse events/reactions/outcome reports, surgical errors, potential disease transmissions, or complaints that are medical in nature, have potential medical consequences, or that may affect the safety of recovered organs.
Reviews any reports of surgical damage; provide follow up to transplant surgeons in the cases of reported occurrences.
Assist in the development, review and approval of new and existing surgical policies and preservation procedures in the recovery, evaluation and placement of donated organs.
Adheres to quality standards and legal compliance with regulatory and accreditation agencies (CMS, UNOS, AOPO, FDA, OSHA, CDC).
Attends Organ Donor Committees and Quality Assurance Process Improvement (QAPI) at donor and transplant hospitals on an ad-hoc basis, and works with NDN teams at these hospitals on innovative ways to enhance donation and transplantation.
Acts as a liaison with transplant surgeons and physicians from transplant centers, to ensure their understanding and compliance with all recovery policies and procedures.
Actively participates in organ case review meetings; assists with problem solving and quality process improvement activities and provides direction to NDN staff in regards to recovery, allocation and perfusion of donated organs.
Oversite of the kidney perfusion laboratory in conjunction with the Director of Organ Services.
Aids in the training of staff in line placement, lymph node recovery, organ recovery for research, bedside liver biopsy, and other advanced practice procedures.
Acts as a spokesperson for NDN with respect to local, state, and national organizations and agencies as indicated.
Education: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy
Experience: Experience as a surgeon performing organ procurement and organ transplant operations; experience in deceased organ donor management is preferred.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in FileMaker, Access, PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Publisher, electronic medical records and computer data base systems. Proficient use of Fax, Photocopier, telephone.
